RP IT helpdesk seems to always point us RP students to reformating our laptops! Reformating is a very popular word in RP. It is also the word RP students hate most!
Advantages:
1. Fixes software related problems by avoiding them completely.
2. Gives you that nice “clean” feeling knowing that your PC is back at its prime with no Windows related slowdowns, bugs or 3rd party software problems.
3. Could possibly save you hours of fiddling around with a problem.
4. Good experience for people who know very little about computers.
5. May help you identify hardware problems
6. Saves time and that saved time means saved costs for your customer.
Disadvantages: ( VERY VERY TRUE)
1. Loss of data.
2. Lack of experience. Eventually you learn next to nothing from formatting. You won't know whats really the problem. Most likely, you would end up reformatting again sometime later.
3. You may spend 2 hours formatting for a problem at the IT helpdesk that would have taken a competent technician 5 minutes to fix.
4. Formatting means you have to install drivers. IT helpdesk would do this for you but it only takes a longer time. Its a complete waste of time. Its also a hassle
5. You forget to mention that you have a scanner/camera/Backberry/Palm/printer/GPS/MP3 player/Ipod/external dial up modem/DSL/cable modem/Wireless Router/All-In-One Fax-Printer or any other such external device. Once they get home you find that your stuff that you plug in don't work.
6. Formatting and still having the same problem. Thus, reformatted for nothing!
